Specifying Materials and Finishes for Custom Furniture: A Buyer's Guide
Category: Capability / Buyer Guide · By Vashone Technology Co., Ltd.
With made-to-order furniture, the biggest lever on cost, durability, and look is not the drawing — it is the material and finish behind it. This guide helps buyers specify with confidence before the first sample.
As a custom furniture manufacturer in Dongguan, Vashone Technology Co., Ltd. works with residential, hospitality, and commercial buyers across the US and Europe. The same frame can be specified a dozen ways; here is how the options break down.
Wood: solid vs. veneer
Solid wood — best for exposed surfaces and a premium feel; more sensitive to humidity and movement.
Veneer over engineered board — stable, cost-efficient, and gives a large-format grain; our panels are CARB Phase 2 / E0–E1 grade, with FSC-CoC available on request.
Metal frames and finishes
Steel and aluminum frames are finished with powder coating or plating. Powder coat is the durable, low-VOC choice we recommend for contract and hospitality use, and it is REACH-compliant.
Upholstery: COM, COL, and contract-grade
For seating, buyers can supply their own fabric or leather (COM/COL) or choose from our performance library. Hospitality and contract projects should specify contract-grade, high-abrasion textiles with fire-retardant treatment per local code.
Surfaces and tops
Stone, sintered slab, laminate, and lacquer each serve a different budget and use. We provide finish chips so you approve the exact color and sheen before mass production.
Why specification discipline matters
Choosing materials up front — not after a sample fails — prevents rework, protects compliance (REACH, CARB, Prop 65), and keeps the lead time on track. We build the finish library and material declarations into the quote so the price you see already clears customs.
Not sure which spec fits your project? Send us the intended use and budget, and we will return a shortlist with finish chips to compare.
